Your Friends & Neighbors is a 1998 black comedy feature film written and directed by Neil LaBute and starring Amy Brenneman, Aaron Eckhart, Catherine Keener, Nastassja Kinski, Jason Patric and Ben Stiller in an ensemble cast. The film was the first to be reviewed on the website Rotten Tomatoes. Set in an unnamed American city, two urban, middle-class couples deal with their unhappy relationships by shamelessly lying and cheating in their quest. Unfortunately, Your Friends and Neighbors lacks the dramatic punch of his first film. We just watch as the characters screw up their lives, and the lives of their supposed friends and loved-ones. Jason Patric tells the story of the best love-making he ever had. Silence follows. Friends & Neighbors does not really explore new places on What's Next, you could rather see it as a further refinement or perfection of an approach that bears witness to great flexibility, because this quintet is agile and can handle the spirits of Dolphy, Kirk and Coleman without sounding like a staid tribute band for a second. The members are all strong players but good listeners too. In addition to his own alto and occasional trumpet and violin, Coleman is joined by Dewey Redman on tenor, bassist Charlie Haden, drummer Ed Blackwell, and on one of the two versions of Friends and Neighbors a variety of friends who sing along as best they can. Actually, the most notable tracks are the two extended pieces, Long Time No See and Tomorrow. Finalist was followed by 'Puros Exitos', released the following year. Neighbors is also an indie rock group from Brooklyn. Recently released August EP can be thought of as a musical companion to Neighbors previous Hooligans EP which was released on Paper Brigade June of 2010. Recorded on the heels of the Hooligans sessions, the August EP builds on the melodic hooks and lush, layered production that is Neighbors stock and trade.
