It was the first solo studio album Joplin recorded after leaving her former band, Big Brother and the Holding Company, and the only one released in her lifetime. Janis Joplin born 19 January 1943 in Port Arthur, Texas, United States, died 4 October 1970 in Los Angeles, California was an American singer, songwriter, composer and painter. Originally read more. Originally the lead singer for the blues rock band Big B read more. Removed from that context, it sounds better today, though it's still flawed. Fronting the short-lived Kozmic Blues Band, the arrangements are horn heavy and the material soulful and bluesy. The band sounds a little stiff and although Joplin's singing is good, she would sound more electrifying on various live versions of some of the songs. Album 1969 8 Songs. Rock 1969. Download MP3. Janis herself has never sounded better on record, but it took me four full listenings to the LP before I could hear her. Thats how bad her band is. When and if you get hold of this record, my suggestion is that you listen really hard to how awful the backup is - everything from the arrangements to the level of musicianship. Janis gives this track indeed, the whole record whatever vitality its got. Listen when shes not singing, here and elsewhere, where the bands on their own. Without Janis to lean on they sound lumpier than a beer hall accordion band
